Stage 1: Should you enter?

  • Read the essay page of our website for a general introduction.
  • Read the Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy. You’ll have to agree to these when you submit your essay. Take particular notice of the personal information that will be published about you, and the copyright section, where you assign Edinburgh Enlightenment Network a license to use your work.
  • Check that you are eligible to enter (see Terms and Conditions).
  • Be sure you are comfortable with your essay, name and university being made public.
  • Familiarise yourself with the FAQ.
  • Consider the proposition – does it interest you? Can you represent a strong position both for and against this proposition?
  • Decide whether you have time to compose your essay prior to the submission deadline.
  • If you decide to enter, proceed to Stage 2.

Stage 2: Compose your essay

  • Familiarise yourself with the Essay Template document.
  • Compose each part of your essay: the arguments for, and against the proposition.
  • Ensure neither part is longer than 2,000 words.
  • Do not use figures, graphs, photos or images.  Be sparing with layout and formatting such as tables.
  • When citing or quoting, use direct quotes. Clearly identify author and source. Provide a hyperlink if possible.
  • Ensure each part is persuasive and well written. These are the criteria against which your entry will be assessed.
  • Double-check your writing before submitting – you can’t change it afterwards.

Stage 3: Submit your essay

  • Ensure you have access to your university email account to submit your entry.
  • Download the Essay Template.
  • Fill in the personal information at the top of the Essay Template.
  • Paste in both the for and against arguments.
  • Accept the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy.
  • Attach the completed document to an email and send it to submissions@edinlight.net.
  • Make sure you attach the actual document – not a link to, e.g., a cloud copy of it.
  • Put the word “submission” in the Subject of the email.
  • Double check you have read the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy, and our FAQ.
  • There is no need to write any accompanying text in the body of the mail – the attachment is all we need.
  • Emails must be sent from your own “.ac.uk” email address.
  • Entries must be received by the submission deadline given in the table above.

Stage 4: After submitting your essay

  • We may contact you if we have any questions.
  • If you are a winner, we will contact you before we announce the winners.
  • Winners will be announced publicly on the date given in the table above.
  • Good luck.
