The Edinlight Essay Prize – a project of the Edinburgh Enlightement Network – aims to encourage students to develop skills in critical thinking, clear reasoning and understanding competing viewpoints in a debate.

The competition has been organised by James Christie and Kapil Summan.

The Edinburgh Enlightenment Network was set up in 2022 by James Christie as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee.

Politically unaffiliated, Edinlight aims to promote, defend and secure our freedoms of speech, expression, thought and conscience, and to support and bring together those who share these values.

John Stuart Mill

“He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them. But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion”

John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859
